Folk Art Painting - Civil War Encampment
Cumberland Gap, ca. 1860's
Oil on canvas, 11 ¾ x 16 ½ inches (canvas sight), 15 ½ x 20 ½ inches (original gilded wooden frame). Painting is in excellent condition with no signature. The frame has some minor, age appropriate, wear.
The encampment, with the overall image probably taken from Pinnacle Overlook, could be either Confederate or Union. The image appears to be an evening scene with smoke rising from four camp fires within the formations of army tents and wagons. There are hills and mountains in the background with some flora and fauna in the foreground.
